CHARLIE Macdonald produced the spell of a lifetime to inspire a Moreton side featuring a quartet of Old Oratorians to a maiden Berkshire section victory in the National Village Cup – leaving them just four wins from a potential historic Lord’s final.

Macdonald, a 2008 leaver, had Sohil Mangat caught behind from the second ball of the game before then trapping last year’s OS and Berkshire Under 18 opener Tejas Akavarapu lbw for nine, the seamer subsequently running through the middle order during an extraordinary eight overs which saw him end with astounding figures of 7-25.

Cookham subsided to 88 all out in just 22.1 overs, Moreton’s run chase taking a hit early on as they slipped to 9-2 before OO Kyle Tappan (’21 leaver) was next to fall.

However, Macdonald’s older brother Will, 1st XI captain in 2006, proved a level apart in amassing a classy unbeaten 44 at a run-a-ball, the final member of The Oratory contingent, Al Squires (13) helping steady the ship as the hosts set up a last 32 trip to Hampshire-based Hambledon in two weeks’ time.
