Tuesday evening saw our Loquitur series return for the first time during this Michaelmas Term. We were thrilled to welcome Martin Berkeley, former Oratory School Governor and Old Oratorian (OS 1978-1984) to deliver a talk to our L6th pupils.

There was standing room only in the Tolkien room as our pupils listened to Martin speak about his time at school and then his professional journey, leading to his appointment as Honorary Consul of Hungary in Wales earlier this year.

He spoke about his experiences in the military, starting with the CCF here at The Oratory school, and his training at Sandhurst. The conversation then led on his role as a Private Banker, providing financial and investment advice to high-net-worth clients upon leaving the army. This led to a very successful career as a consultant, specialising in investments, banking and financial regulations.

Martin also spoke about his experience teaching. He was an Adjunct lecturer at Alliance Business School in Manchester, a guest lecturer at University of Reading Law School and at l’École Supérieure de Commerce de Paris. Martin then explained his appointment as Honorary Consul, what his role entailed, the people he worked with, and the challenges he faced.

It was a very interesting and stimulating evening. A very big thank you to Martin for taking time out of his busy schedule to return to his old school.
