We are delighted to be able to pass on the news that Pope Leo has declared that our founder, St John Henry Newman, will be proclaimed Doctor of the Church on 1st November - All Saints' Day.
When examining the distinguished roster of Doctors of the Church, St. John Henry Newman emerges as a figure uniquely defined by the vast scope of his intellectual legacy. While many Doctors are celebrated for a specific theological specialty, Newman's teaching spans the entirety of the faith, shaping doctrine and theology across multiple branches. Crucially, his work directly confronts problems of faith and reason that remain burning issues in the modern era.
His output was immense; a truly prolific writer, Newman left behind a formidable body of material ranging from book-length theological treatises and eloquent sermons to spiritual reflections, poetry, novels, essays, and a vast collection of personal letters. This comprehensive body of work has earned him an extraordinary endorsement from the highest levels of the Church, with his teachings acclaimed by nine Popes, including St. John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, and the current pontiff, Pope Francis.
Details on how we will mark this momentous occasion to follow.
